Android-based smart phones are now very popular with many people, this is because the Android operating system is more flexible than other platforms. There have been many Android apps that circulated in the public today, and most of them licensed for free. One of the unique Android application is RemoteDroid.
RemoteDroid is an application that can be used over Wi-Fi Android to turn your phone into a wireless keyboard and mouse for your computer. This application for phones and tablets running Google’s Android operating system. RemoteDroid app has two versions, paid and free. For a free version, which features a touch-screen mouse control, two mouse buttons onscreen, with right-click/control-click functionality. Use in either portrait or landscape mode. Works with any WiFi network and also compatible with Mac, Windows and Linux operating systems.
And for the paid version, it’s have all free version feature with automatic connection over your wireless network — no IP address entry required. Pro users will also receive free upgrades with new features, including Swype compatibilty. RemoteDroid consists of two parts: the phone application that can be downloaded from the Google Android Marketplace, and an application server for your computer that can be downloaded from RemoteDroid official website.
For the setup, see this step-by-step tutorial which I get from the site TalkAndroid.com.
The steps for downloading and running the RemoteDroid server software on your PC. Before you begin you must already have a wireless home network already setup. You will also need Java SE Runtime Environment 1.5 or higher. Last but not least you will of course need a phone running the Android OS.
- Go to http://www.remotedroid.net and download the latest RemoteDroid server zip file.
- Extract the downloaded zip file to a folder on your PC. (example: C:\remotedroid)
- Now open the location to which you extracted the zip file and run the file RemoteDroidServer.jar
- The IP address of the PC RemoteDroidServer is running on will be displayed in the window you have just opened. Remember this IP as you will need it later in this guide.
Setting up the RemoteDroid app on your Android device.
- Go to the Android Market
- Search for the RemoteDroid app, download it, and install it on your phone
- Open the RemoteDroid app that you just installed
- Enter the IP address of the PC you want to control (This will be the IP from Step 4 above)
- Tap Connect
- That is it! The large red square on your phone is the mouse capture box, the left green box acts as the left mouse button, the right green box acts as the right mouse button, and the keyboard icon between the green boxes brings up the keyboard input window to allow you to type on your PC.
- Enjoy your new wireless mouse and keyboard.
